Fun Fact 2: I might die here.

I’m concerned about dying here.
Now, let me preface that by saying I always think I’m going to die before I come to Africa and it always turns out ok. However, Cape Town is highly developed (for an African city) and they drive on the left side of the road. More than once, I’ve looked in the wrong direction and almost gotten run over. To make matters worse, everybody drives stick so they don’t stop for pedestrians–even if the walking man is up. You just need to get out of their way as quickly as possible. It doesn’t sound scary, but this place makes New York City jaywalking look like child’s play. I’ve had to (literally) sprint across the street in order to not get run over.
Other than that, it’s pretty safe around here. A lot of cops for the World Cup. I’ve been barked at and yelled at several times and people often eye my camera. Still, I don’t feel any less safe than when I walk the wrong side of Brooklyn. I definitely feel safer than in Uganda. I’d feel comfortable sending a female friend here.
As a side note: They call stoplights “Robots.” It’s awesome.

You think that driving stick makes a person not stop for pedestrians?
