Game time: What is this?

What is this a photo of?

Make sure you make a guess before you hit the jump.

That is a photo of the sole of my right shoe.

Why am I showing you this photo? Well, let me share a little story with you. I work part-time at a center that provides substance abuse and mental health services to very, very low income populations. Some of the poorest of the poor in New York City. One day, I was sitting around with my legs crossed–ankle to knee style–and the (very obviously homeless) woman next to me started to play around with the piece of sole hanging off my shoe.(1) She looks up at me and says, with a very straight face, “Daaaaamn… You need new shoes…”

That was when I realized that I really need new shoes.

Sure, I guess the fact that my socks get soggy because water seeps through the bottom whenever it rains would have been enough. Perhaps the fact that my shoes get cleaner after I run through the dark grey, nasty Manhattan snow would have been enough. I guess there’s also the inside heel that has been worn down to the cardboard.

Ok… so I’ve always known that I needed new shoes, but I’ve never been quite this motivated. All it took was a truly destitute person to make fun of my material posessions.

What can i say? They’re really comfortable.

If anybody would like to contribute a pair of white Nike Dunks, please see inside.
